FAO DIGITAL INNOVATION DIALOGUE: Session 6 - China’s Approaches and Experiences in Digital Agriculture and Digital Rural Area 

Abstract

In recent years, China has made great efforts to promote the integration of the internet, big data, artificial intelligence with the development of agriculture and rural areas, vigorously develop digital agriculture, accelerate the development of e-commerce in rural areas, and actively promote informatization in rural areas. In 2018, the retail sales of e-commerce in rural areas in China reached 1.37 trillion yuan, the e-commerce business volume of agricultural products exceeded 300 billion yuan, and the coverage of optical fiber in villages reached 96 percent.

For this reason FAO CIO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (MARA), would like to invite you to the 6th Digital Innovation Dialogue on China’s Approaches and Experiences in Digital Agriculture and Digital Rural Area on Friday, 11 October 2019 from 10:00 to 11:30 hours, in the FAO HQ IRAN ROOM, Rome, Italy.

During the Dialogue, MARA will share China's wisdom and programmes in the agricultural big data, top-level design of digital villages, agricultural policies and practices, and innovation cases.  

Guest Speaker

Wang Xiaobing is the Director-General and researcher of the Information Centre of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA). He has been engaged in rural policy research, plant industry management, administrative examination and approval mechanism reform, performance management, informatization of agriculture and rural area, etc. He has rich experience in the field of agricultural marketization and informatization. He has served as Deputy Director of the General Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Deputy Director of the Marketing and Information Department.

Fengying Nie is currently professor, Deputy Director General of Agricultural Information Institute (AII), and Deputy Director General of Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), and Chief of International Agriculture and Information Research Groups. She completed her PhD from CAAS and Joint PhD program by US and China. Since then she has conducted research projects on food security and nutrition, poverty reduction, meats, international cooperation strategy and etc. and most of them were sponsored by the domestic founds such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Science and Technology, and the State Council Leading Group for Poverty Alleviation and Development, China Natural Science Foundation, China National Social Science Foundation , and by the international organizations like FAO, WFP, UNDP, IFPRI, CABI, IFAD and ADB.


About the Digital Innovation Dialogue

Digital Innovation Dialogues were launched in early 2019 by the FAO IT Division (CIO) to serve as a forum for increasing and exchanging knowledge between industry experts and FAO staff actively working on digital innovation projects or new technologies with the ultimate aim of transforming small-scale successes into large-scale digital services. Multidisciplinary innovation front runners and practitioners will coming together to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience through open and informal discussions. So far, the previous Digital Innovation Dialogue series have included workshops with Alibaba Cloud, IBM’s The Weather Company, ESRI, National Telecommunication Agency in Brazil and Gartner.
