DIGITAL INNOVATION DIALOGUE: Session 4 - Digital Transformation and Gender Equality

Digital Innovation Dialogue was launched in early 2019 by the FAO IT Division (CIO) to serve as a forum for increasing and exchanging knowledge between industry experts and FAO staff actively working on digital innovation projects or new technologies with the ultimate aim of transforming small-scale successes into large-scale digital services. Multidisciplinary innovation frontrunners and practitioners are coming together to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience through open and informal discussions. So far, the previous Digital Innovation Dialogue series have included workshops with Alibaba Cloud, IBM’s The Weather Company and ESRI.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasizes the importance of gender equality to the achievement of all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recognizes the need to leverage information and communication technologies (ICTs) to promote the empowerment of women.

Building on this and in keeping up the discussions on the digital age, CIO and the Social Policies and Rural Institutions Division (ESP) would like to invite you to the 4th Digital Innovation Dialogue on Digital Transformation and Gender equality on Monday, 30 September 2019 from 10:00 to 11:30 hours, in the Austria Room (C-237), FAO headquarters. The dialogue will focus on gender equality and the participation of women and girls in the digital economy as digital services end-users, employees and digital content producers and the potential of ICTs to foster their empowerment.

Guest Speaker: Ms Elisa Leonel, Head of Superintendence for Consumers Affairs at National Telecommunication Agency in Brazil, will present data on the gender gap in ICTs and the challenges that must be addressed to bridge the gap. Digital technologies are a means to empower girls and women, but there are still many issues to be addressed in order to overcome the gender digital divide, especially in rural and remote communities.
